How to Feel Confident Speaking English from Day One

Starting an English camp can feel exciting… but also a little stressful. Many students worry about one thing in particular: speaking English.

At Jersey Language Adventure (JLA), we understand that speaking a new language can be intimidating at first. The good news is that you don’t need perfect grammar or a huge vocabulary to communicate well. Confidence comes from practice, not perfection.

Here are our best tips to help you feel confident speaking English from your very first day at JLA.

1. Don’t Worry About Making Mistakes

This is the most important tip.

Mistakes are a normal part of learning. In fact, they are a sign that you are trying. At JLA, teachers and students expect mistakes — and nobody will judge you for them.

The goal is not to speak perfect English. The goal is to communicate.

Every time you make a mistake, you learn something new.

2. Speak Little and Often

You don’t need to speak for long periods. Even short sentences help build confidence.

Try to speak as often as possible during the day:

  • asking for food
  • asking questions
  • joining conversations
  • talking during activities

At JLA, our small groups mean you will have lots of opportunities to speak in lessons, which helps you improve faster. But remember, practicing during class is only a small part of the adventure. We’ll encourage you to speak English all day long!

3. Use Simple English

You don’t need complicated vocabulary to express yourself.

Simple sentences are powerful, such as:

  • I think…
  • I like…
  • I don’t understand.
  • Can you repeat, please?
  • What does that mean?

Using clear, simple English is a great way to speak confidently and naturally.

4. Ask Questions

Asking questions is one of the best ways to practise English.

Even questions like:

  • Where are we going?
  • What time is dinner?
  • Can I borrow a towel?

will help you get comfortable speaking in real situations.

At JLA, teachers are always happy to help and will encourage you to ask questions.

5. Use English During Activities

One of the best things about JLA is that English doesn’t stop after lessons.

During activities like surfing, coasteering, kayaking, or beach games, you will use English naturally:

  • giving instructions
  • working as a team
  • asking for help
  • celebrating success

This is a fun and relaxed way to practise speaking without pressure.

7. Focus on Communication, Not Vocabulary

If you don’t know a word, don’t panic.

Try to explain it another way. This is a real skill and helps you become a better speaker.

8. Be Brave for 10 Seconds

Sometimes confidence is just about starting.

If you feel nervous, tell yourself: “Be brave for 10 seconds.” Say the sentence. Ask the question. Join the conversation.

After you start speaking, it gets easier.

Final Thought: JLA Is a Safe Place to Speak

At Jersey Language Adventure, we create an atmosphere where students feel comfortable, supported, and encouraged. With small classes, friendly teachers, and lots of fun activities, you will quickly realise that speaking English can be enjoyable.

So don’t wait until your English is “perfect.”
